Greenland Premier Kuupik Kleist is from the other side of the world, but his home has a lot in common with the Virgin Islands, and indeed with all the world’s overseas countries and territories, he said at a press conference Thursday afternoon.

In particular, he said, it’s essential for all of the OCTs to carefully manage their relationships with other jurisdictions, since OCTs are generally small and rely heavily on imports and tourism.

Greenland, an autonomous country in the Kingdom of Denmark, has a population of about 56,000 people.

Mr. Kleist said he is here “listening and learning” in preparation for the next version of the Overseas Association Decision.

The relationship between OCTs and the European Union may be changing when the current OAD – the agreement that grants OCTs free market access to the EU – expires in 2013.
