Governor Gus Jaspert is deactivating the National Emergency Operations Centre.

Activated on Sept. 4, the NEOC is supposed to “function as the headquarters of the activities undertaken in response to a disaster emergency or threatened hazard alert,” according to the 2003 Disaster Management Act.

In a Friday statement, Mr. Jaspert explained that the centre’s deactivation indicated a change in emphasis.

“The deactivation of the NEOC signals the transition from response into a period of recovery and continued development,” he said. “I know that many are still facing difficult times and I expect relief will continue to be provided to the most vulnerable.”

The governor also noted that the bulk of the United Kingdom police officers assisting the territory left this week.

“I am pleased that officers from Bermuda and the Cayman islands who have been funded by the UK government will stay with us for months to come,” Mr. Jaspert added.
