Russell Harrigan, a former BVI Tourist Board director and the owner of this newspaper, will serve as the board’s new chairman, Premier Dr. Orlando Smith said Monday.

Speaking before the House of Assembly, Dr. Smith listed the 12 business and community leaders who will serve on the board: Mr. Harrigan, Sharon Flax-Mars, Romney Penn, Julien Johnson, Denniston Fraser, Clyde Lettsome, Tanya Whistler, Julia Dawson, Wilbert Mason, Robert Henry, Elmore Stoutt and Lawrence Wheatley.

The board will also include three ex officio members: the managing director of the BVI Ports Authority, the permanent secretary in the Premier’s Office, and the BVITB’s director of tourism.

Dr. Smith, who has repeatedly called for the tourism sector to be reviewed and revamped, said he plans to meet with the new board in the coming weeks.

“I have already asked the chairman to organise a meeting of the industry so that collectively we can hear their concerns and challenges as we formulate our rescue-and-recovery strategy,” Dr. Smith said. “I am hereby calling on all persons to listen up for the date of that meeting and to make time to attend.”
