Should marijuana be legalised in the territory?

Students will consider this question and others during a series of debates among the territory’s secondary schools this month.

At the first session, scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the Sir Rupert Briercliffe Hall, they will debate the proposition, “The legalisation of marijuana will result in the socioeconomic decline of the Virgin Islands.”

Cedar International School will argue for the proposition, while the Claudia Creque Educational Centre will oppose it, according to Government Information Services.

A second debate is scheduled for 6 p.m. Saturday at the hall between the Bregado Flax Educational Centre Secondary Division and the St. George’s Secondary School. The topic is to be “female victims of underage teenage pregnancy, regardless of age, must be allowed to return to school,” according to GIS.

Later that night, a third debate will take place between the Elmore Stoutt High School and the BVI Seventh-day Adventist School on the topic “junk food should be banned in all primary and secondary schools.”

The semi-finals will be held on Wednesday, and the finals will follow during Education Week on March 13.
