The territory’s secondary school accreditation process is “well under way,” Acting Chief Education Officer Jillian Douglas-Phillips told lawmakers during the recent Standing Finance Committee deliberations.

The Department of Education has put Connie George, a former deputy principal at Elmore Stoutt High School, in charge of making sure the process continues to move forward, Ms. Douglas-Phillips said, according to a report on the November SFC proceedings.

Third District representative Julian Fraser asked when “the accreditation would actually be on stream,” the report states.

The biggest hurdle holding back ESHS’s accreditation is the school’s “infrastructure,” Education and Culture Minister Myron Walwyn replied.

“He stated that there were approximately four standards that ESHS failed, which all had financial implications, thus slowing down the process,” the SFC report states.

Ms. Douglas-Phillips said that accreditation is “one of the department’s highest priorities,” and that “the intention is to have all schools accredited,” according to the report.
