“Cash-flow issues” have put the brakes on construction at the planned culinary arts centre at H. Lavity Stoutt Community College, Financial Secretary Neil Smith said this week.

Mr. Smith declined to give details on the nature of the issues other than to say they have caused a temporary halt to construction. He said he anticipates work will resume in about one month.

“We’re committed to finish as soon as possible,” Mr. Smith said.

Government unveiled plans to build the centre in 2008, when Premier Ralph O’Neal announced that about half the funds for the project had been pledged by the European Commission.

Then in August, Mr. O’Neal signed a $2.2 million contract with Quality Construction Ltd.

Work began on the centre in October, and was scheduled to last eight months, according to a government press release issued at the time.
