While the Virgin Islands tends to update individual laws regularly, there hasn’t been a comprehensive effort to consolidate legislation in recent years, which means that “access to laws has become more difficult,” Attorney General Dr. Christopher Malcolm told the House of Assembly Wednesday.

“At times it’s difficult to know the current state of the law,” Dr. Malcolm explained.

To help mitigate this problem, legislators passed amendments to two laws on Wednesday: the Interpretation Act and the Law Revision Act.

Dr. Malcolm said the amendments are part of government’s ongoing quest to organise the laws in the VI’s books and make them more accessible to the average person.

Lawmakers unanimously supported both bills.

“This bill was needed, especially after the 2007 Constitution,” Opposition Leader Ralph O’Neal said of the Interpretation Act amendment.
