In the future, the H. Lavity Stoutt Community College will have to be resourceful when it comes to finances, according to long-time educator Dr. Janet Smith.

About two dozen people gathered at the Eileene L. Parsons Auditorium to hear Dr. Smith deliver the annual Frederick Pickering Memorial Lecture on Tuesday.

Dr. Smith, who has been assisting HLSCC with its accreditation process, has also worked with several community colleges in the United States.

During her lecture, she explained how those US institutions are meeting challenges that are similar to the ones facing HLSCC. Then she listed several recommendations for the Virgin Islands school, which she said was modeled after its US counterparts.

In order for the colleges to remain relevant in the economy, marketing has to remain at the top of their agenda, she said. Businesses, she added, have to be aware of the role such institutions play.
