Inadequate space, lack of staff training, and limited access for disabled patrons are among the challenges facing the Library Services Department in recent years, Chief Librarian Suzanne Greenaway wrote in the agency’s annual reports of 2010 and 2011, which were recently tabled in the House of Assembly.

“There is severe space constraint through the library, but especially in the Caribbean Studies Unit, the Processing Unit, the Adult Unit and the Reference Unit,” Ms. Greenaway wrote in the 2010 report.

In the 2011 report, she added, “Over the past years, the book collection, staff, patrons and stakeholders have increased. It is therefore accurate to say that the library has outgrown its present location.”

Sometimes there were no seats available for patrons, the report stated. “It is important to record that the lack of space was also a hindrance to the expansion of the library service,” Ms. Greenaway wrote.

In both reports, the librarian also recommended that facilities be made available for patrons who are physically disabled.
