Justice Indra Hariprashad-Charles sentenced a 43-year-old man convicted of incest and indecent assault on Nov. 3 to 11 years in prison Tuesday.

“I believe for a woman it’s the worst sexual offence that you could think about,” Ms. Hariprashad-Charles said in sentencing the man accused of having sex with his 11-year-old daughter.

A unanimous jury had convicted him of two counts of incest and three counts of indecent assault but acquitted him of two counts of rape and three of buggery. The various acts were said to have taken place between August 2010 and March 2011.

The man vehemently denied the allegations while testifying in his own defense and in a police interview replayed during the trial.

Senior Magistrate Valerie Stephens and Ms. Hariprashad-Charles both asked the media to refrain from identifying the man, out of respect for the victim’s privacy.
