After she was introduced to scores of concertgoers on Friday at the Eileen L. Parsons Auditorium, Dobet Gnahoré began her performance by making a flute-like sound with her voice.

As she hummed, she walked onstage wearing a tie-dyed dress, large round earrings, bracelets, necklaces and anklets. A dark line ran from the middle of her forehead down to her mouth, and two other lines connected her temples and her eyes.

After singing two songs, the Ivory Coast artist paused to greet the audience and to introduce her next song. “This is for women around the world,” she said, before singing in one of several African languages she would use throughout the night.

The show was the first in the H. Lavity Stout Community College’s 17th Performing Arts Series.
