Justice Indra Hariprishad-Charles said Tuesday that the oldest case on the criminal Assizes list will proceed next week despite a defence attorney’s request for adjournment.

Sir Richard Cheltenham, QC, the lead attorney for Verna Maduro, asked that his client’s trial, scheduled for April 4, be postponed because he is sick.

Ms. Maduro previously pleaded not guilty to 188 charges, including theft, breach of trust, furnishing false information and false accounting. Prosecutors allege that she used BVI Tourist Board credit cards for as much as $500,000 in personal purchases while she worked as the BVITB’s financial comptroller.

Ms. Hariprishad-Charles said the court and the Crown have made preparations to hear the case, which could last at least three weeks. She added that a junior counsel can stand in for Sir Richard until he can return to court.
