Police are advising residents to avoid an Internet scam using fake news reports to promote work-from-home opportunities.

The scam involves e-mails linking to “a fake NBC news site” where a person identified as a Virgin Islands resident “is interviewed on her success in working from home with earnings of $15,000 to $17,000 a month,” according to a press release issued by the Police Information Office.

The sites appear to use Internet address information to determine users’ locations, then offer a fake news website claiming to be based in the user’s city.
