Last weekend, the Tortola Sports Club hosted a junior squash tournament to select members for the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States junior squash team, which will compete in Cayman in late July.

Team BVI Coach Joe Faragher-Kneipp was pleased with the efforts of his 12 players. He highlighted newcomers RJ Wong, Tai Thomas, Jake Hallet, Gethin Jones, Stephan Weyers and Lawton Green.

“These players continue to train and improve and I look forward to seeing them next year during this tournament with a full year of playing under their belts,” he said in a release sent to this newspaper.

In the under-11 girls division, Darci Reich defended her title against newcomer Nadira Morgan, of St. Vincent, 3-0.

Both girls displayed great sportsmanship, according to an organiser. However, the St. Vincent player was honoured with the sportsmanship award. In 2015, Darci won it in St. Vincent.

In the under-19 girls bracket, Kirstin Gordon lost a close finals match, which was decided five games. Jada Ross, of St. Vincent, took the win, 3-2.

In the under-11 boys bracket, Cedar International School students Alex Fountain and Tai Thomas played a tight match, but it was Alex who walked way with the win.

The under-13 boys group featured the defending champion Luca Reich versus Jasper Forte. The games were close, but it was veteran Luca — playing his last match in the age bracket — who took the win. However, Jasper was awarded the Most Improved Squash Player trophy, while Stephan Weyers won the third place trophy.

Leo Forte took third place in the under-17 boys bracket. One of his competitors, Kai Bentek, is number two player in the Caribbean. Kai also who won the under-17 bracket.

Places for the OECS team were not available as of press time.
