Many professional women work all day at the office and then come home and continue to work on their domestic duties, leaving little if any time for themselves. While women may feel this is the best way to care for their families, it can actually be a recipe for disaster, said panelists at the Women’s Empowerment Summit at H. Lavity Stoutt Community College Saturday.

“Many of us get up in the morning expecting to get done in 12 hours what it really takes 17 hours to finish,” said Dr. Virginia Rubaine, psychologist and head of the Community Mental Health Centre. “All these things would be impossible to complete in a 12-hour day.”

Dr. Rubaine joined Dr. Pradeep Ramoutar, obstetrician and gynaecologist, in a panel with summit organiser Portia Harrigan and Elmore Stoutt High School Vice Principal Donna Clyne-Thomas.

According to Dr. Rubaine, the first step to achieving a balanced life is to have realistic expectations, and then to set priorities.
