A resort was honoured for its solar lights and environmentally sustainable practices. A grocery store was applauded for its recent reinvestment and community commitment. Then a 43-year veteran of the hospitality industry stood before the crowd at the Scrub Island Resort on Saturday to be recognised by his peers, followed by a doctor, hoteliers and other businesspeople.

Several dozen business and community leaders turned out to an annual awards dinner hosted by the BVI Chamber of Commerce and Hotel Association. Dr. Birney Harrigan, the organisation’s chairman, told attendees that the occasion was held to honour businesses and individuals for their accomplishments and contributions.

In addition to the awards, she also said the group plans to work closely to represent its members’ interests before the new government. She added that the group hopes the government will consider decreasing customs duty, will allow alternative energy developments, and will increase overall business competitiveness.
