The Lions Club of Tortola celebrated its 40th anniversary Saturday with a ceremony and fundraising effort at The Moorings Mariner Inn.

During the event, 20 charter members were recognised, as were the 37 presidents who have served the club since it was founded in 1972, according to a press release from the Lions.

Two of the charter members — A.O. Shirley and Leando Nibbs — were also honoured for their 40 years of continuous membership in the club.

After an address by Lions President Jeremy Hodge, Premier Dr. Orlando Smith and Opposition Leader Ralph O’Neal spoke, encouraging club members to continue their community work and pledging their support.

Lion Carvin Malone explained the club’s public-private partnership with the BVI Health Services Authority, which was undertaken in celebration of the anniversary.

The club is working with businesses and the BVIHSA to purchase vascular access instruments and a new ultrasound machine for the Peebles Hospital operation room, according to the press release. All told, the club reported that it raised about $15,000 for the project.
