Bird watching isn’t just about birds: It also offers an opportunity to notice other natural sights, according to Clive Petrovic.

The Virgin Islands scientist was among nearly 25 volunteers who participated in the National Parks Trust’s annual Christmas Bird Count, which was held on Dec. 29 on Tortola and Jost Van Dyke and on Jan. 2 on Anegada.

“For me as a scientist, it is just another chance to get out in the environment and enjoy nature’s little secrets,” Mr. Petrovic said.

The NTP organises the local bird count each year and sends the data collected to the National Audubon Society, a United States-based environmental organisation that records data about bird populations and habits around the Americas.

The bird watch this year was successful, though the weather was windy, said Nancy Woodfield-Pascoe, planning coordinator of the National Parks Trust.
