After a string of burglaries and robberies in the area, Main Street business owners and residents met last Thursday at St. George’s Episcopal Church to discuss what can be done about crime in Road Town.

Since 2008, there have been 41 burglaries and eight robberies on Main Street, Police Sergeant Ivor Fraser said at the meeting.

“For the burglaries, police have made eight arrests,” he said, although four of those arrests were in connection with one burglary at a fashion retailer, committed in 2009. In relation to Main Street crime, one additional arrest was made that year in connection with another burglary; one was made last year; and two have been made so far in 2011, he said.

The police have about 18 additional suspects they believe were involved in burglaries and robberies in the area, but criminals have learned to evade detection with tactics like wearing socks or gloves on their hands to avoid leaving fingerprints, he said.
