An Antiguan man accused of trying to stab his wife to death last year denied the charge Tuesday, telling jurors that that injuries came when he was involved in a fight with her lover.

Police arrested and charged Samuel James, a 41-year old Antiguan man who lives in Huntums Ghut, shortly after the April 11, 2011 incident in which his estranged wife Loretta Richards was severely stabbed.

Mr. James’ High Court trial on attempted murder and unlawful and malicious wounding charges began last week before Justice Rita Joseph-Olivetti. Jurors were scheduled to begin deliberating in the case yesterday.
