A former police officer died in a traffic accident Sunday afternoon, the territory’s first traffic fatality this year, police said.

Sea Cows Bay resident Maxwell Smith was driving his vehicle along with two passengers on the West End Public Road early Sunday evening when the accident occurred, according to a police press release. Mr. Smith’s vehicle was later pulled from the water near the road, and he was pronounced dead at about 8 p.m., the release stated.

Police are still investigating the cause of the accident.

Mr. Smith, who retired from the police and later opened a security firm, unsuccessfully contested the Third District seat with the United Party in the 1994 and 1999 elections.
