Long before she found out she was pregnant, 18-year-old Yessica George had wanted to give birth to a baby on New Year’s Day. That wish came true on Sunday in the form of her first child, J’la Linton George, born at 5:15 a.m. at Peebles Hospital.

The baby came two days before she was due, the new mother said, adding, “I am happy I got this over with before the time.”

J’la was born healthy, and so far seems easygoing, the mother said Tuesday. “She doesn’t really cry,” Ms. George said. “I had to set the alarm last night so I could wake up and feed her.”

J’la’s father, Al Linton, said he didn’t expect to be the first father of the year. “She is a blessing to the family. I am very excited,” Mr. Linton said in a phone interview. “I was surprised that she was the New Year’s baby.”
