Marcus Lloyd, who pleaded guilty to possession of a gun and explosives in July, was sentenced to a 12-month term of imprisonment in Magistrates’ Court on Friday.

He received four months for the ammunition charge and 12 months for gun possession, to run concurrently from the time of his arrest on April 7.

Mr. Lloyd was arrested after police observed a bus travelling at a high speed near the Road Town roundabout and performed a stop-and-search. The driver of the vehicle was Dale Davis, who faced similar charges that were later dropped by Crown prosecutors.

In her sentencing, Magistrate Tamia Richards said she took into account the defendant’s standing as a well-known contractor, businessman and family man in the territory. She also considered testimony from one of his three daughters, who said the family had faced hardship since the time of Mr. Lloyd’s incarceration, she added.

“But I must also take into account the seriousness of the offence, and the fact that the gun was loaded,” Ms. Richards said. “This offence is far too prevalent in the territory.”
