A man who was found on a 50-foot sailboat loaded with about 1,000 pounds of marijuana was sentenced to eight years in prison on Friday.

Adrian Arthur, after maintaining his innocence in May, pleaded guilty to supply and importation of a controlled substance, and unlawful possession of the drug. His sentence will run from the time of his remand after the Oct. 25 bust.

In May, the captain of the vessel, Ralph James, who also pleaded guilty, was sentenced to seven and a half years in prison.

According to the allegations, a joint customs and police marine patrol stopped a 50-foot boat, Graecrest, 14 miles south of Anegada on the day of the arrest.

When an officer asked if there was anything illegal on the boat, Mr. James allegedly replied, “Yes: marijuana — plenty — about a thousand pounds,” according to prosecutors.

In earlier court proceedings, acting Principal Crown Counsel Tiffany Scatliffe said the 567.72 kilograms of marijuana — valued at more than $5 million — was found spread throughout the vessel.

A third man who was found on the vessel, Glenroy Pierre, has maintained his innocence and awaits trial.
