Dimitri Maduro, a 22-year-old resident of Cane Garden Bay, pleaded guilty to assault causing actual bodily harm and damaging property in Magistrates’ Court on Friday, after allegedly punching a Baughers Bay dock worker in the face and breaking his sunglasses in the process.

Mr. Maduro pleaded not guilty to using threatening language, but Crown Counsel Herbert Potter offered no evidence on the charge, and it was dropped.

At 9:56 a.m. on April 7, the defendant arrived by boat at Delta Petroleum Marine Depot in Baughers Bay, Mr. Potter said. The captain of the vessel he was aboard, wanting immediate service, had a brief argument with a fuel pump operator, who explained that there were other boats in line, the prosecutor added. That’s when Mr. Maduro allegedly got involved.

After an argument, Mr. Maduro returned to the boat momentarily before jumping onto the dock and punching the fuel pump operator in the right eye, Mr. Potter explained.

Mr. Maduro, who was unrepresented in court, was officially charged at 3:48 p.m. the day of the incident. He was later granted $7,000 police bail.

The defendant told Senior Magistrate Valerie Stephens that he was provoked, and that both men involved were using indecent language before things escalated.
