Healthy coral reefs bring the fish divers love to watch and fishers love to catch, but here, as around the world, some coral reefs have not been doing as well as they once were.

That was the observation that pushed Trish Baily and others to join a group of divers, boaters and sea-life enthusiasts to begin taking annual surveys of key reefs in the territory back in 1997.

This week, volunteers surveyed Spyglass Wall off Norman Island and the reef off Pelican Island. As in past years, the group followed the Reef Check protocol, which guides them to look for certain species of fish and signs of healthy coral.

“What we’re looking for are the indicator species,” Ms. Baily said Monday morning aboard a Sail Caribbean Divers boat at Spyglass Wall.
