Little Dix Hill man Trey Williams admitted to burgling Deuces Night Club in Baughers Bay last October, but he denied stealing the $1,400 he’s accused of taking.

“I did break in, but I did not steal $1,400. I took the weed I was charged for,” he told the Magistrates’ Court on Friday. “The $1,400 was a frame to get me caught by the police.”

“This will make for an interesting case,” remarked Senior Magistrate Tamia Richards.

According to Crown Counsel O’Neal Simpson, the owner of Deuces was giving Mr. Williams a ride into Road Town when he stopped at his club. The defendant allegedly followed him inside, where the owner put $1,400 in a mayonnaise jar.

The complainant then dropped off Mr. Williams at One Mart, Mr. Simpson said.

Later in the day, he returned to find that his establishment had been burgled. He allegedly called the police when he discovered the cash was missing.

The defendant was arrested on the same day, and police found 25 small bags of suspected cannabis and $40 in cash on his person, the prosecutor continued.

Mr. Williams pleaded guilty to possessing 25.9 grams of cannabis.

Ms. Richards granted him bail for his burglary trial on the condition that he attends the Sandy Lane Centre for drug treatment. She also remarked that the police shouldn’t have given him personal recognisance bail.

“I don’t know why the police gave you bail on your own recognisance,” the magistrate said. “It’s just amazing.”
