The contracts are signed, preparatory work is under way, and residents can expect to see more work soon in Road Town as contractors begin replacing collapsed sewer pipes, Communications and Works Minister Mark Vanterpool said last week.

The minister and nine Virgin Islands contractors signed deals worth a total of $866,681 for work on what officials are calling “Phase One of the National Sewerage Project.”

“There’s a pipeline that ran from somewhere near the FirstCaribbean Bank straight up to Bolo’s, Vanterpool’s Pharmacy, and then eventually goes across to the pump station,” Mr. Vanterpool said. “Those pipelines have collapsed over the years, and we are replacing them in this first phase.”

Phase one also includes some improvements to the main pump station.

Funds for the project come from a 2009 Banco Popular loan. The $45 million loan was to be split: $30 million for work on the new Peebles Hospital and $15 million for sewerage works in Road Town and East End/Long Look.
