Richard Morgan and Sue Tucker became this year’s BVI Triathlon’s National Sprint Champions after winning Saturday’s race.

Mr. Morgan, the 2012 national champion, clocked a time of one hour, 16 minutes and 16 seconds, taking the title from last year’s winner Russel Crumpler.

Mr. Crumpler didn’t defend his title, but Mr. Morgan’s time was just under three and half minutes faster than Mr. Crumpler’s 2013 winning time and just under two minutes faster than his 2012 time.

Guy Williamson was one minute and two seconds behind Mr. Morgan for second place, while Adrian Dale took third.

In the women’s division, Sue Tucker finished in one hour, 19 minutes and 13 seconds, setting a new course record, which was also broken by the second and third place finishers.

The previous record was set by Kat Crumpler last year. Ms. Tucker shaved three minutes and 52 seconds off the record.  Second place went to Tash Ruschenski and the third-place finisher was  Gillian Howe.

Currently, there is only five minutes and 37 seconds between the men’s and women’s records. The women’s division has improved by almost eight minutes since 2011.

Chris Ghiorse remains the course record holder for the men with a time of 1:13:36 set in 2011.

Team Commonwealth won the team event with a time of one hour, 11 minutes and 32 seconds.

The event was held at Sandy Ground boatyard, Sopers Hole. The event consisted of a 750-metre swim, a 20-kilometre bike ride and a five-kilometre run.

The next event is the BVI  Peter Island Athlon on June 14.
