Residents and visitors young and old enjoyed the performances at East End’s Moviene Fahie Festiville, but Mr. Vegas, the headlining performer in the early morning hours of Aug. 8, only allowed adult women to join him on stage for the “Bruk it Down” contest.

“Nah, nah. She look too young,” said Clifford Smith, the Jamaican musician who performs as Mr. Vegas, when one hopeful contestant gestured to a security guard to be allowed over the stage barrier. Half a dozen other female fans were allowed onstage, and the winner – chosen based on audience applause – received a $300 prize.

Live music started at about midnight Tuesday, with short sets from regional calypso and soca monarchs backed by the Virgin Islands’ Xtreme Band.

Dominica’s first female calypso monarch, Tasha P, opened the show. She performed several of the songs about women and family for which she’s known, such as “Let Children Be Children,” “Woman is Head of the Family” and “It’s Woman Time.”
