Residents and visitors young and old enjoyed the performances at East End’s Moviene Fahie Festiville, but Mr. Vegas, the headlining performer Aug. 7, only allowed women who looked like adults to join him on stage for the “Bruk it down” contest.

“Nah, nah. She look too young,” Clifford Smith, the Jamaican dancehall artist who performs as Mr. Vegas, said when she gestured to a security guard to be allowed to join the contest. Half a dozen other female Mr. Vegas fans were allowed onstage, and the winner – chosen based on audience applause – received a $300 prize.

After Mr. Vegas’ set, which included his renditions of other Jamaican artists’ hits such as Bob Marley’s “Buffalo Soldier,” the crowd moved slowly out of the village and into the streets. There, hundreds follow Pumpa & the Unit toward Beef Island for a Rise and Shine Tramp that lasted until after 9 a.m.
