A teacher with 18 years of experience will act as deputy principal of the Elmore Stoutt High School in the absence of Wade Tobin, who was hospitalised shortly after he was named the school’s new acting principal last month.

In his absence, Vanessa Garraway, who was appointed for one year effective Sept. 24, is to be responsible for the management of the school.

Mr. Tobin, a former principal of the BVI Seventh-day Adventist School, is currently undergoing treatment at Peebles Hospital, according to a Government Information Services press release that did not give details on his condition.

Ms. Garraway was introduced to faculty and staff by Acting Deputy Chief Education Officer Dr. Lavon Chalwell Brewley last Thursday, and to the student body during an assembly Monday morning, according to GIS.

She told the Department of Information and Public Relations that she looks forward to working with the faculty, staff and students.

Experience

A 1988 graduate of the then-BVI High School, Ms. Garraway pursued studies at the University of the Virgin Islands’ St. Thomas Campus.

She later transferred to Florida Atlantic University, graduating with a Bachelor of Science in mathematics in 1993. The next year, she returned to Tortola and began teaching at the Althea Scatliffe Primary School.

She later transferred to the then-BVIHS in September of that year. She has headed the school’s Mathematics Unit for the last five years, according to GIS.

At ESHS, Ms. Garraway has also served as the year head for forms two and three, and she has received professional training in teacher certification from the University of the West Indies.
