The right to know is an inherent part of every democracy, Christopher Varlack, chief records management officer, said Friday during Right to Know Day.

He was speaking during an open house held to recognise the international observance at the National Archives and Records Management Unit.

The preamble of the Virgin Islands’ Constitution was among documents on display there. Visitors also were encouraged to fill out an information request to be used in a collage, according to the archivist.

Even though the unit deals most often with historic information, the archivist also stressed the importance of making recent information public.

“It is important for people from all walks of life to be aware and engaged in knowing what [freedom of information] is and how it can benefit them,” Mr. Varlack said.
