The head of a regional organisation that aims to promote information and communications technology met with Virgin Islands officials last week to discuss ways to improve the sector.

Bernadette Lewis, the secretary general of the Caribbean Telecommunications Union, met with officials at the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission and the Ministry of Communications and Works.

MCW Minister Mark Vanterpool said the CTU’s international connections could help the territory in its quest to regain access to American television programming. That access was lost in March last year when the ownership of BVI Cable TV was transferred from Innovative Communications Corporation to Caribbean Asset Holdings.

After the switch, the VI’s 9,000 cable customers saw some of their channels switch to Spanish, prompting many to complain. CAH claimed that Innovative had been accessing the American channels illegally, and that the companies that sell programming designate the VI part of the Latin American market.
