Governor Boyd McCleary swears Dr. Orlando Smith in as the territory’s second premier Wednesday afternoon.

Late Wednesday afternoon, Dr. Orlando Smith – the territory’s new premier – and his cabinet were officially sworn in by Governor Boyd McCleary during a ceremony at a packed Sir Rupert Briercliffe Hall.

Dr. Kedrick Pickering (R-D7) was sworn in as deputy premier and minister of natural resources and labour. Mark Vanterpool (R-D4) was named minister of communication and works, Myron Walwyn (R-at large) was sworn in as minister of education and culture, and Ronnie Skelton (R–at large) took the oath as minister of health and social development.

Dr. Smith’s National Democratic Party won Monday’s elections with five district seats and all four at-large seats.

The opposition is made up of four Virgin Islands Party members: Ralph O’Neal (R-D9), Julian Fraser (R-D3), Andrew Fahie (R-D1) and Alvin Christopher (R-D2).
