On Feb. 8 I broke my ankle while on a morning walk at The Baths on Virgin Gorda. My wife went to get help and found Athley Stevens, a National Parks Trust employee, who was extraordinarily helpful. Mr. Stevens calmed my wife, called for help, and with another gentleman and tourists managed to carry me to the beach.

From there, Virgin Islands Search and Rescue took me by boat to the dock. Mr. Stevens and VISAR should both be commended for their help.

I ended up at the Bougainvillea Clinic and was operated on by Dr. Nagy Darwish that evening. I am now back in New York City, and the orthopaedic surgeon here says the leg is healing nicely.

We have been coming to the territory for 13 years and own a home on VG. The people are always very polite and helpful, but were especially so on this occasion. There were at least two other accidents that day at The Baths, and the VI’s emergency services were sorely tested. Thankfully, they proved more than capable.
