The Pan American Health Organisation has committed $1 million to supporting the territory’s health response after the passage of hurricanes Irma and Maria, government announced Monday.

The funds will be used to purchase pharmaceuticals; vehicles for the Environmental Health Unit; and medical supplies for hospitals, clinics and elderly homes, according to Government Information Services.

The money will also be put toward conducting repairs to the Adina Donovan Home for the Elderly, the Virgin Gorda Elderly Home, and clinics that experienced minor damage.

To discuss the assistance package, PAHO Regional Advisor Dr. Dana van Alphen and Procurement Specialist Ibargues Santiago visited the territory this week and met Monday with Health and Social Development Minister Ronnie Skelton and his permanent secretary, Petrona Davies.

Also present at the meeting were Sharlene DaBreo, the director of the National Emergency Operations Centre, and Ronnie Lettsome, the principal consultant for PAHO’s SMART Hospital Project.
