The Terminators

The BVI Amateur Volleyball Association’s Power League came to a close on Saturday night at the  Multi-purpose Sports Complex.

Phoenix Red and the Terminators were crowned the league champions in their respective divisions.

Phoenix Red defeated last year’s defending champions — the Legends — in five sets to claim the women’s division.

The final scores were 16-25, 22-25, 25-15, 25-20 and 19-17.

Phoenix Red mainly consists of players from last year’s Volcanoes.

Henrietta Alexander of Phoenix Red had 15 kills, one block and six aces, while Simone Glasgow finished with eight kills, two digs and three aces in the win. Teammate Tamisha Georges had four kills, one block, four digs and six aces.

The Legends were led by Lynelle Gumbs who had 11 kills, 11 digs and one ace, while Debra Dagou had 13 kills, 11 blocks five digs and one ace.

Melissa Amey finished with six kills and two blocks in the loss.

In the men’s final, the Terminators beat Just Dream in four sets, 25-18, 20-25, 25-19 and 25-22.

It was the 15th time that the Terminators had won the men’s division championship.

The Terminators’ Neville Brathwaite had 12 kills, one block, six digs and one ace in the win.  Teammate Denfield Solomon had 10 kills, four blocks and three digs, while Damian Creque finished with 12 kills and one dig.

Just Dream’s Canice Marquis led his team with 16 kills, one block, six digs and two aces in the loss.

Drexel Glasgow finished with eight kills, one block, six digs and two aces, while Marlon Solomon had one kill, 11 blocks and three digs.

“The league went pretty well,” BVIAVA Treasurer Willis Potter said. “The level of competition was tighter than previous years.”

Mr. Potter hopes next year the league will feature a high school division, instead of just an exhibition game.

The association hopes to hold several events now that the league has come to an end. Earlier in the season, the BVIAVA hosted the Battle of the Associations, but not with much success. Another tournament or league the association is exploring is a Battle of the Churches event later this year.

The BVIAVA is still working out details about hosting the World Qualifier tournament on June 7-11, which will attract teams from around the region.
