The number of commercial burglaries in the first four months of 2011 is more than double the number in the same time period last year, but the percentage of burglaries for which charges were brought has also doubled, police said.

Between January and April, there were 41 burglaries of commercial establishments in the territory, compared to 19 in the same time period last year. The number of dwelling burglaries for the same time period increased from 58 to 63, and “other” burglaries not fitting in those two categories increased from 29 to 36, according to a written statement police released to the Beacon.

At the same time, the detection rate — that is, the percentage of burglaries for which charges are brought — has increased from seven percent to 14 percent, according to the statement.

“We have been focusing on burglaries, doing proactive work and targeting prolific offenders,” Police Commissioner Reynell Frazer said in the statement.
