Elections are more than a year away, but members of the two biggest parties are gearing up now for what is sure to be a competitive race.

National Democratic Party leaders, who control the current government, have said they’re focusing on carrying on with the people’s business, but the party hosts weekly cash bar fundraisers at its headquarters in the Columbus Building in Road Town.

The opposition Virgin Islands Party is likewise raising funds and carrying out other early preparations for the coming campaign, like recruiting potential candidates, building up district committees, and bringing more people into the party, said party President Carvin Malone at a community meeting in Carrot Bay this week.

“To run an effective organisation, we have to have members,” he said Wednesday, adding that the party is also working on ways to keep members informed as the campaign season progresses.

One immediate next step for the VIP will be to get an office, which will likely be staffed by volunteers, Mr. Malone said. The office can serve as a place for various committee meetings to be held and for volunteers and candidates to meet with the public.
