The Makos Swim Club will host a Politicians’ Swim Meet and Eat on Saturday at 6:30 a.m. at the Prospect Reef Resort pool to raise funds for the Makos Swim Club.

Members of the swim club will also race.

“The club needs money to pay Prospect Reef for the use of the pool, to cover the costs of equipment and to have money in reserve to meet the expense of travelling overseas to regional swim meets such as the OECS championship in November,” said co-organiser Pat Archibald-Bowers.  “Several politicians, from both the district and the territorial races, have already signed up and more are expected to get back to us over the next couple of days.”

Independent candidates and politicians from all the major parties have been invited and are expected to swim in at least two races.

“The politicians’ races will be fun events, but the Makos members will also demonstrate the various strokes they are learning and race against each other,” said co-organiser Julia Dawson.

The Makos Swim Club started in 2009 with just a few members, but now has more than 20 children enrolled.  Since the club started, its members have competed in the annual OECS Swim Championships and have also attended a swim camp at the Nova Southeastern Aquatic Centre in Florida.

Two of the club’s swimmers, Elinah and Amarah Phillip, competed and medalled at the 20th Annual OECS Swim Championships in St. Lucia in 2010 and the club is hoping to send more swimmers to this year’s event scheduled to be held in St. Lucia next month.

Tickets are $25 and includes a “traditional Virgin Islands” breakfast with bush tea.  Tickets can be purchased from Makos Swim Club members at Maria’s By the Sea or by e-mail: makos.sc@gmail.com.
