Table setting contest

Twenty students from the Bregado Flax Educational Centre competed

Sunday in the Janice Blyden Table Setting and Service Competition, an event aimed to teach students about tourism, an official said. BVI Tourist Board employee Sasha Flax said students underwent a week of training prior to the event under the instruction of staff members at Rosewood Little Dix Bay Resort. The trainers taught the students how to properly set the table, wait on customers and clear the table, Ms. Flax said. Each student was asked to sell two tickets to attendees, who acted as customers. Judges then assessed how well the students served the customers, Ms. Flax said. “We want the students to know how important tourism is to us, and put them in a position where they can actually practise it,” she said. This year 20 students participated in the event, compared to 15 last year, Ms. Flax added. She predicts that interest in the event will grow in the future. “The students were very excited, very enthusiastic about it,” she said. “I think it’s something that’s going to get very big.”

The Bardadian government plans to commission a National Tourism Plan to plot a course for the industry over the next ten years, Bermuda’s Royal Gazette newspaper reported. Government officials are currently selecting a consultant to produce the plan, which may cost up to $200,000. The plan will discuss new hotel investment, promoting medical tourism, creating a convention centre, and possibly creating a tourism authority, the newspaper reported.
