Prison Superintendent Richard Holder, who served on the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force for 29 years before taking the position, was pronounced dead Saturday morning after being rushed to Peebles Hospital, according to police.

“Superintendent Holder served this territory with distinction and honour, both as a police officer and then, later, as superintendent of the prison,” Premier Dr. Orlando Smith wrote on his Facebook page Saturday. “His love for the BVI, his old-fashioned courtesy, his pride in the prison farm will all be sorely missed.”

Mr. Holder, who was appointed prison superintendent in 2010, was 55 at the time of his death.

He was commended for his efforts of rehabilitation and education for prisoners by High Court Justice Albert Redhead at the close of the criminal assizes in July, and was often seen around the island selling eggs from the prison farm.

“May God comfort all who mourn,” Dr. Smith wrote.
