Deshawn Stoutt will get another chance to challenge his conviction after being found guilty of shooting and killing a man outside a Fat Hogs Bay bar on Jan. 25, 2007 and receiving a life sentence.

The territory’s highest court of appeal, the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council, has granted permission to hear the matter, according to a Nov. 7 decision.

Mr. Stoutt was convicted by a High Court jury of murdering Godwin Cato, who was shot to death outside Johnny’s Bar in Fat Hogs Bay.

In November 2011, three justices from the Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court of Appeal upheld the verdict and sentence; however, they did allow that, under the Parole Act, Mr. Stoutt may ask the High Court to set a date for when he may be eligible for parole.

“We are still seeking his acquittal,” Mr. Stoutt’s lawyer, J.S. Archibald, QC, said Monday.
