Last October, Alphonso Dick lost his job as an inventory supervisor. Since then, he has been unemployed and digging deep into his savings to stay on top of his expenses.

But on Christmas, he got a text message informing him he had just won $7,500 from the Rotary Club of Road Town’s annual Christmas Raffle.

“I was going to get something for my fiancée when I got a text saying I won some money,” Mr. Dick said. “I didn’t believe it, so I called the number to see if it was someone playing the fool.”

Charles Crane, coordinator of the raffle, confirmed that it was indeed true.

Mr. Dick was the first place winner of this year’s raffle, which has been held annually for about nine years, according to Mr. Crane.

Sarah Penney, a member of Hands on Volunteers, won second place, with a sum of $5,000.

On Tuesday during the Rotary Club of Road Town’s weekly meeting at The Moorings, each winner was presented with a cheque.

Ms. Penney told the Rotarians her money will go towards the needy children Hands on Volunteers assists in Haiti.
