About 30 recycling bins have been placed on Virgin Gorda as part of the government’s effort to reduce litter and encourage residents to separate their trash, officials announced last week.

The multicoloured, triple-compartment bins are designed to collect glass, cans and other waste, according to Government Information Services.

The glass and cans are to be processed by three recycling businesses: Clean and Green VI, Greencret BVI, and BVI Recycling. Other waste — including Styrofoam containers, cups, paper and other trash — will be taken to the VG landfill.

Marquese Maduro, waste management officer in the Department of Waste Management, said recycling is “a major part” of the agency’s new strategy.

“We are slowly introducing this programme to select areas in The Valley and Gun Creek, which were chosen based on the premise that the trash placed in the bins, along with the use of bins, can be easily monitored,” Mr. Maduro said.

He added that the bins are not to be used for household garbage and bulky waste.

Once the programme is deemed a success in VG, the department will place recycling bins throughout the territory, according to GIS.

“Recycling is important if we wish to reduce our carbon footprint and move towards a more sustainable environment,” said DWM Manager Greg Massicote.
