Robert Saunders got his first-ever eye exam on Tuesday in front of Rite Way Food Market on Flemming Street. Then he got a free pair of glasses.

The members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints were administering the exams and giving out free eyewear.

“Now look at this and let me know if you see better or worse,” Terri Bonilla said as she gave the construction worker a pair of glasses to try.

“Most people don’t realise that as they age they don’t see as well as they used to,” said the church member, who is a registered nurse.

Even though they were performing basic exams, the volunteers were encouraging glasses recipients to follow up with more thorough tests.

The local church has given out more than 700 pairs so far, according to Ms. Bonilla’s husband Bob. Its aim is to give out 3,000 in the Virgin Islands before moving on to other islands in the region.
