A major road-widening project commenced over the weekend on the section of road known as the “Paul Wattley By-Pass,” according to Government Information Services.

The roadwork, in the vicinity of the Methodist Manse Road and Russell Hill, is expected to last eight weeks. It is to include excavation of the hillside; blasting; the relocation of power lines; trucking of material; dust control measures; and traffic diversion, according to a GIS press release.

During the project, the road will be closed to traffic travelling east from Russell Hill at the junction to the St. George’s Primary School, and residents only will be permitted access from Joe’s Hill Road.

People taking children to or from St. George’s Primary School are asked to use Main Street for the duration of the project.

“We know that the road is heavily used and therefore we are asking for the cooperation of motorists so that the works could be executed in a timely manner,” said Arlene Smith-Thompson, acting permanent secretary in the Ministry of Communications and Works.

Ms. Smith-Thompson also said the works will “significantly reduce the current traffic congestion that has plagued the area for many years.”
