Odinga Louie-Warner was diagnosed with HIV in 2003. A few years later, she decided to be completely open about her status.

That decision didn’t come without some discrimination from her community, the St. Vincent and the Grenadines native told police officers at the Road Town Police Station on Thursday.

The HIV/AIDS counselor and peer educator visited the Virgin Islands last week as part of the National AIDS Programme’s “Love Yourself Enough to Live” campaign.

“All in all, I decided I wasn’t going to let HIV kill me,” Ms. Louie-Warner told the officers. “I had too much to live for. I had set goals and I was already making moves to achieving them.”

The mother of two contracted the disease from a boyfriend who was a police officer, she said.
