KATS Learn to Swim opens registration

The KATS Learn to Swim eight-week programme is now accepting children 7 years old and up.

The programme is held at the Nanny Cay pool from 5:15 p.m. to 6:15 p.m. on Tuesdays, Wednesdays or Thursdays.

Classes are limited to 10 children for each day. There will be a minimum of two instructors to ensure safety, according to KATS press release.

The objective of the programme is to take a non-swimmer and at the end of the eight weeks he or she will be able to swim the length of the pool, according to the release.

Participants are asked to bring a towel, a bottle of water and $50 for the cost of the entire programme.

Bikers to head to Anegada

The BVI Mountain Bike Club will host its annual Anegada Desert Duel on Sunday.
The event is open to all divsions.
A chartered Speedys ferry will depart Spanish Town, Virgin Gorda at 6:15 a.m. VG participants are asked to be at the dock by 6 a.m. to load bikes and other gear.
The ferry will arrive at Trellis Bay at 6:30 a.m. and we will be departing by 7a.m.
The ferry will leave Anegada at 4:30 p.m., stopping first at Trellis Bay, then finishing Spanish Town.
“We have a great new race course being marked out and plenty of trophies up for grabs for all divisions,” said Gareth Thomas. “We can accomodate all riders, so if you wish to do a shorter course we can put that on for you too. There will be plenty of cadet races all supervised and safe.”

Running

A charity fun run will be held on Saturday in support of the Family Support Network and other charities. The 5k run and two-mile walk will start and finish on Chalwell Street in front of Midtown Restaurant on Main Street. The event is open to everyone and men are encouraged to wear an article of women’s clothing. There will be prizes for the best outfits. There is a $20 registration fee. The second annual Virgin Gorda Half Marathon will be held on May 18.

The next race in the Blenheim Trust 5k Series is the ‘The Beast’ at Paraquita Bay on May 11. The finale is on June 1 at the A.O. Shirley Recreation Grounds.

Triathlon

The Peter Island-Athlon Challenge and youth development event on May 12 will include:
•    Islander Challenge “A”: Half-mile kayak, five-mile hilly mountain bike, two-mile flat run.
•    Islander Challenge “B”: Half-mile swim, five-mile hilly mountain bike, two-mile flat run
•    Islander Challenge “2.0”: One-mile swim, ten-mile hilly mountain bike, five-mile hilly run
Due to ferry limitations, space is limited to five individuals for Challenge “A” and 15 individuals for Challenge “B” and “2.0.”  
Off road tyres and at least a 24×32 or smaller gear are recommended for bikes.
The youth development triathlon will be the Deadman’s Beach Blast. This race will comprise of a 50-metre swim, one-mile bike and a quarter-mile run.  The youth development event will be held while swimmers for the “2.0” are still in the water.
Awards and a Peter Island Breakfast will be held after the event for all participants and volunteers.
